When visiting Lukang, a trip to the Mazu Temple to pray for peace is a must—but do you know where the incense in your hand comes from or how it is made? In Lukang, there is a historic shop dedicated to cultural preservation. They have repackaged and promoted Taiwan’s incense shop culture, not only helping travelers understand the manufacturing process but also sharing this unique Chinese culture with the international community.

Founded in the 21st year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, the first-generation ancestor established the "Shih Chin Yu Incense Shop" in Quanzhou, Fujian, marking the origin of its long history. Soon after, the second and third generations, including Mr. Shih Kuang-tzu, relocated to Taiwan, allowing the incense culture to take root in Lukang. Through the efforts and heritage passed down through generations, it has flourished into a renowned brand recognized far and wide.

Using pure, natural raw agarwood paired with selected spices and a special secret formula, the incense produces minimal smoke that is non-irritating to the nose. The refreshing aroma is primarily used for worshipping spirits and ancestors, filling halls with an elegant scent. The steady sandalwood fragrance creates a serene and stable atmosphere. In recent years, Shih Chin Yu San Fang has integrated the "Tourism Factory" concept, extending ancient incense-making techniques to the public for hands-on experience. They have also developed small coil incense and "lying incense" for meditation, which serve as excellent tools for modern people to relieve stress or eliminate odors.

Insisting on 100% natural materials and following ancient production methods, their persistence stems from the family motto: Only by insisting on quality can the finest incense be created. Consequently, by focusing on cultural heritage and DIY incense-making experiences, the shop has continued to expand. By combining education with entertainment, they have gained favor not only with local travelers but also with international tourists. (Photography by Liu Li-wen)
