Southeast Asian agarwood is divided into two main types: Hainan (Hui'an) and Star Valley (Xingzhou). These names are derived from the major early regions where agarwood was concentrated and exported.

Star Valley agarwood has a solid exterior, making it particularly suitable for bead making and carving. Its fragrance is rich, and currently, over 90% of the agarwood market consists of Star Valley agarwood. Within the Star Valley type, the main producing regions are Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and Papua New Guinea. Malaysia is further divided into West Malaysia and East Malaysia, where climate differences result in slight variations in characteristics and flavors.

Indonesia is the largest production area for Star Valley agarwood, including regions such as Garimantan (comprising Kun Dian, Da Lagan, and Mani Zao), Sumatra, Irian (including Gayabula and Malaok), and Ambon. Sumatra and Ambon have limited production, and their presence in the market is nearly extinct. Brunei, located in Northern East Malaysia, also produces high-quality agarwood with a superior fragrance. Papua New Guinea, which borders Irian in Indonesia, produces agarwood with a similar flavor to Gayabula.

Star Valley agarwood is primarily made from eaglewood trees. It has a strong fragrance, with either a sweet or cool aroma, and a bold, concentrated flavor that remains consistent. The wood's density is high, making it more likely to sink in water, and both raw and mature agarwood are suitable for carving. The agarwood from West Malaysia has a more elegant and sweet fragrance compared to other Star Valley varieties. In recent years, many agarwood products labeled as "Vietnamese," "Cambodian," or "Bodhisattva" bracelets are made from West Malaysia agarwood.

Hainan agarwood includes regions like Hainan (China), Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, and India.

Hainan agarwood mainly comes from the honey-scented tree species and has a fragrance that can be described as "elegant and sweet." The fragrance features a dual nature—sweet and cool—and may resemble fruit or floral scents. It is more penetrating and develops slowly, creating a lasting, delicate aroma. Monks in temples use Hainan agarwood for meditation, relaxation, and focus. Currently, wild Hainan agarwood is increasingly scarce, with many materials damaged by insects and fragmented. Most of it is used for incense or medicinal purposes, and it is rare to find carvable agarwood, making large, intact pieces of high value.
