Lanxiang (Scented Orchid)

The Shennong Ben Cao Jing records: "Wearing lan, it benefits the water pathways, kills toxins, and wards off misfortune. Long-term use nourishes qi, lightens the body, prevents aging, and sharpens the mind."

Lanxiang, or scented orchid, is a common aromatic herb from the Asteraceae family. Its name comes from its fragrance, which resembles that of orchids, and its use in protecting against bad odors. It is called "Peilan" because of its fragrant properties, and wearing it helps purify the air and ward off impurities.

The name originates from the Li Sao poem: "Ho Jiang Li and ward off the Artemisia; tie the autumn orchid as an ornament," and it is listed as a fragrant herb in the Chu Ci.

The Bencao Gangmu states, "Lan can be worn, bathed in, or tied." This shows the close relationship between peilan and daily life.

Qu Yuan, known for his fragrance, wore aromatic herbs such as Peilan and led a unique life under the Chu sky, with his virtues being worthy of this rare herb.

In the Jing Chu Suishiji, it says: "On the fifth day of May, it is known as the Orchid Bathing Festival." In Qu Yuan's Nine Songs - Yun Zhong Jun, there is a verse that mentions, "Bathing in orchid broth, surrounded by fragrant herbs," showing that the tradition of the Dragon Boat Festival existed during his lifetime. On this day, people "compete to gather medicinal herbs to cure all diseases," and "boil orchids and bathe in the broth to remove illness."

"Lan" refers to the orchid grass, also known as fragrant grass or wake-up grass. Huainan Zi says: "Its leaves resemble those of chrysanthemums, and women and children enjoy wearing it," hence it is also called "Peilan." There is a folk saying: "During the Dragon Boat Festival, the weather gets hot, and the five poisons awaken, causing unrest." This reflects that the arrival of summer brings with it the breeding of insects, the spread of diseases, and the onset of epidemics, making preventive measures and disaster warding a central feature of the festival.
