The root bark of the peony is used in incense, known for its calming and sleep-promoting properties. (Suitable for offerings, religious ceremonies, incense burning, purification, meditation, and relaxation.)
Peony Incense
"In the garden, the peony blooms with grace, the lotus at the pool shows little passion. Only the peony truly represents the country's color, its bloom moves the capital at the right season." ~ Appreciation of Peony by Liu Yuxi
Peony root bark, also known as "Danpi," is derived from the root of the peony plant. The roots are selected from plants that are 3-5 years old and are harvested in the autumn or spring. After cleaning the soil, removing the fibrous roots and stems, and peeling off the bark, it is dried and can be used as medicine. The dried root bark is called "original Danpi," while the peeled bark is referred to as "scraped Danpi." Peony root bark is known for its calming properties and is used for stress relief and sleep improvement. It is a special remedy for cooling heat and detoxifying the blood.
It has a unique fragrance, slightly bitter and astringent, with a slight numbing sensation on the tongue. Because of its distinct odor, peony root bark has insect-repelling properties and can be stored with other herbs to prevent insects.
According to the "Compendium of Materia Medica," "Among all flowers, the peony is the first, and the peony is often called the 'king of flowers,' while the peony flower is regarded as the representative of the highest quality." It is noted that "the best peonies are red, and even if the plant produces seeds, the root will still grow new sprouts, so it is called the 'peony.'"
The peony is a traditional, prestigious flower in China, known for its large, beautiful flowers, vibrant colors, and strong fragrance. It has been praised by people throughout history for its high ornamental and medicinal value. Since the Qin and Han dynasties, it has been listed as a medicinal plant in the "Shennong's Materia Medica" and has appeared in various ancient texts.
Peony culture represents the combination of spiritual and material civilization. Looking at the historical development of the peony both in China and worldwide, it truly reflects the prosperous times. Peony blooms during times of national prosperity, symbolizing the nation’s flourishing. "When the nation is prosperous, the flowers also bloom," and history has again proven this profound principle.
The peony symbolizes "wealth and prosperity" and is honored with the title of "king of flowers." In the Tang dynasty, the poet Pi Rixiu wrote, "When the last red petals fall, it begins to bloom, and is called the king of flowers." A single peony represents "a top-class prosperity."
~ Legend of Peony Root Bark ~
Over a thousand years ago, in Suzhou, there was a skilled silk weaver named Liu Chun. The flowers she wove looked as fresh as if they had just been picked, and the birds she wove appeared as if they could fly when called.
One year, the governor’s daughter needed to prepare a dowry, and Liu Chun was given a month to weave 24 genuine silk quilts with peony designs. However, Liu Chun had never seen a peony and did not know how to weave it. Half a month passed, and Liu Chun became increasingly worried and thinner. One night, she suddenly spat blood and collapsed onto her loom. At that moment, a beautiful girl appeared and poured a medicinal liquid into Liu Chun’s mouth. Liu Chun immediately woke up. The girl softly said, “I am the Peony Fairy.” She then pointed outside the window, and immediately, a garden full of blooming peonies appeared.
Liu Chun, seeing the beautiful peonies, quickly resumed weaving. One by one, the gorgeous peonies were woven, attracting swarms of butterflies. The governor's official hurriedly took the quilts to the capital, but as soon as they entered the house, all the peonies on the quilts withered and lost their color. The governor was furious and sent people to capture Liu Chun, but she had already left with the Peony Fairy, leaving behind only the medicinal bottle. Inside the bottle, there was half a bottle of root bark-like material, which people later recognized as peony root bark.
