Sandalwood is a semi-parasitic evergreen tree with dense, solid wood. Its surface color ranges from pale yellow to light brown, and it deepens over time. It mainly grows in the hot and humid regions of eastern India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and Fiji. The sandalwood tree grows extremely slowly—often taking decades to mature—making it one of the slowest-growing trees. A fully grown tree can reach up to ten meters tall. It is delicate and requires a host plant such as phoenix tree, red bean tree, or acacia to survive in its seedling stage. Due to its limited yield and high demand, sandalwood has always been a rare and valuable material since ancient times.

Ancient Sanskrit manuscripts, among the oldest known texts, mention sandalwood as a mystical substance that serves as a bridge between humans and the divine. In temples, sandalwood is often intricately carved into statues, prayer beads, and ritual items, believed to channel celestial energy and promote serenity and divine communion. In feng shui, sandalwood is known as a “prosperity-attracting wood.” Its elegant aroma and refined texture are thought to bring good fortune.
