At midnight I play chess and bathe in osmanthus scent,
Sipping wine and composing verses in lingering delight;

Like a lotus reclined on cool stone, serene and pure.

Osmanthus flowers, fruits, and roots all have medicinal properties. The blossoms are harvested in autumn, the fruits in winter, and the roots throughout the year—each part sun-dried for preservation.

Its leaf veins resemble a ceremonial tablet (圭), hence “Gui”;
Its texture like rhinoceros horn, earning the name “Mu Xi” (木犀);
