Jiangzhenxiang is a type of incense commonly used in Taoist rituals. In the Heavenly Emperor’s Supreme Taoist Scripture, it is described as “the sacred incense for offering to the Heavenly Emperor.” The ancient text Immortal Legends notes: “When burned, it draws down cranes from the heavens. Among all incense used in star-offering rituals, this is considered the finest.” Jiangzhenxiang is recommended for worship, Buddhist ceremonies, scenting spaces, purification, meditation, and emotional well-being.
In the Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao Gangmu) by Li Shizhen of the Ming Dynasty, the entry for Jiangzhenxiang under the wood section cites Li Xun: “For star-offering rituals, this incense is the best. It is highly efficacious for talismanic rites and the name 'Jiangzhen' comes from its ability to summon the true ones (deities).” Jiangzhenxiang is also known by other names such as Zitengxiang and Chicken Bone Incense. In Wu Yiluo’s New Compilation of Materia Medica from the Qing Dynasty, it is similarly stated: “It can summon all true deities when burned, hence the name.” The word “Jiao” refers to Taoist altar rituals for invoking divine blessings, while “Jianjiao” refers to events such as spirit salvation rites and temple consecrations.
The Compendium of Materia Medica also documents the plant form of Jiangzhenxiang, identifying it as a kind of Ziteng (wisteria): “The leaves are long and narrow, the stem resembles bamboo roots, extremely dense and firm. It has layered bark, white flowers, and black seeds. Even when soaked in alcohol for 20 to 30 years, it does not decay. When burned, the stem emits a purple fragrance that can summon spirits.” During the Song Dynasty, it was not only used in rituals but also in daily life. Medicinally, Jiangzhenxiang was used to treat bruises, wounds, bleeding, pain, swelling, and to promote tissue regeneration.
As an essential incense in Taoist altar offerings, Jiangzhenxiang holds a special place in religious ceremonies. In Taoism, incense is seen as a spiritual medium that connects the human realm with the Three Realms, and its use is deeply embedded in Taoist scripture. True Taoist incense must be made from natural, pure ingredients. Jiangzhenxiang is often burned alongside other sacred materials such as Zhentang Incense, Baimao Incense, Agarwood, and Aquilaria sinensis (Green Wood Incense).
In Illustrated Materia Medica, Volume 12, Jiangzhenxiang is said to come from southern Guizhou. When blended with other herbs, its smoke rises straight to the sky, even attracting heavenly cranes. In Xiangpu (The Incense Manual) by Hong Chu of the Song Dynasty, Jiangzhenxiang is noted as suitable for incense blending: its scent resembles rosewood, and while not strong alone, it becomes rich and elegant when combined with other materials.
The ancient Chinese regarded incense with reverence, and believed that excellence was not limited to high-grade agarwood or kyara alone. When making coil incense with agarwood powder, a small amount of Jiangzhenxiang was essential to bring out the most refined and authentic fragrance. However, during the Qing Dynasty’s isolationist period, resources of Jiangzhenxiang nearly ran out. Later generations sought alternatives and found a similar scent in huanghuali (Dalbergia odorifera), a member of the same botanical family. This led to the name “fragrant rosewood” (Xiangxiang Huangtan, 降香黃檀), but despite the resemblance in scent, huanghuali lacks the same medicinal potency and refined aroma as true Jiangzhenxiang.

The Unique Characteristics of Shih Jinyu Muxiang Zhai’s Herbal Incense:
1、Premium Herbal Ingredients
All herbal incense products are made from carefully selected, high-grade Chinese medicinal herbs. Each herb is finely ground into powder and blended according to traditional formulas, resulting in a perfectly balanced recipe passed down through generations.
2、Absolutely No Additives
We never add artificial fragrances, essential oils, perfumes, synthetic aromas, lime powder, plasticizers, miscellaneous wood fiber, or any other unnecessary chemical additives.
3、100% Natural and Pure
Made entirely from high-quality natural herbs with high oil content and potent medicinal properties, our incense contains minimal fiber. This results in a burn that is smooth, non-drying, non-irritating, and free from harshness. The aroma is mild yet rich, mellow, and layered. While the main herbs express their unique scent profiles fully, the precisely balanced formulas create a harmonious and refined fragrance with great depth.
4、Naturally Darker Ash Colors
Some premium herbs have a naturally rich and dense nature, which may result in darker ash colors when burned—ranging from light gray to deep gray. This is a natural presentation of unadulterated herbal material. We do not add lime or wood powder to artificially whiten the ash, ensuring that what you experience is 100% pure and authentic herbal incense.
5、A Daily Essential for Spiritual and Holistic Living
Beyond its uses in worship and ceremonial offerings, our herbal incense serves as an essential tool for cultivating peace, grounding, healing, cleansing, dispelling negativity, warding off evil, and supporting wellness.
