Huo Xiang (藿香)
In Chinese tradition, Huo Xiang has a long history, frequently mentioned in Buddhist scriptures such as the Lotus Sutra, Surangama Sutra, Light Sutra, and Nirvana Sutra, indicating its deep connection with Buddhism. In Ben Cao Zheng Yi Wan, it is described as fragrant but not overpowering, warm but not excessively dry or harsh, able to dispel dampness and negative energy, and promote healthy spleen and stomach qi. (Suitable for offerings, Buddhist ceremonies, incense burning, purification, meditation, and cultivating tranquility and vitality.)
Huo Xiang Fragrance
From Huo Xiang Song: "Not as fragrant as Huo Xiang, it has a faint and subtle scent, capturing the spirit from a hundred fathoms, nourishing the energy to the sky." ~ Jiang Yan, Southern and Northern Dynasties
During the Ming Dynasty, Zhou Jiaozhou’s Xiang Cheng stated that Huo Xiang comes from Southeast Asian countries. Its fragrance resembles that of Suhe and Douliang. After drying the flowers and leaves, they can be used to scent clothing or ground into powder for topical application.
Huo Xiang’s appearance is somewhat like mint, but unlike mint’s refreshing scent, it exudes an exotic fragrance that blends earthy depth, the sweetness of lavender, and the primal allure of musk. It is both mysterious and wild, approachable yet sensually appealing. In China, it is affectionately called "Dao Shou Xiang" (Hand-held Fragrance), as its leaves leave a unique scent when touched.
Huo Xiang has long been used in traditional Chinese incense formulas. Besides burning incense, it was also used in making ink paste. In Chinese medicine, Huo Xiang is considered mildly warm and spicy. It clears summer heat, relieves nausea, harmonizes the stomach, and resolves dampness. The famous Huo Xiang Zheng Qi water is still widely used today to treat digestive disorders, gastroenteritis, and symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
Plant Name:Tamāla-pattra (Aromatic Herb)
One meaning in Xuanyingyin Yi says: "Tamāla-bat fragrance, also known as Huo Ye Xiang." Hui Lin’s interpretation in Yinyi San mentions: "Tamāla-bat, the fragrance, is called Huo Xiang in the Tang Dynasty and Root Fragrance in ancient texts." In Chinese tradition, Huo Xiang has long been used and frequently appears in Buddhist scriptures such as Lotus Sutra, Surangama Sutra, Light Sutra, and Nirvana Sutra, signifying its association with Buddhism.
In Jiaxiang Fahua Yi Shu, it is explained: "Tamāla-bat, the fragrant name of Huo Ye Xiang, means the fragrance of fresh flowers."
In Ben Cao Zheng Yi Wan, it is described:
“Huo Xiang is fragrant but not too intense, warm but not excessively dry or harsh. It can remove damp and negative energy, promoting healthy spleen and stomach qi, and is the most effective remedy for those suffering from the dampness obstructing spleen yang, fatigue, poor appetite, and a thick and dirty tongue coating."
Its fragrance is pleasant and helps to balance stomach qi. It can be used to treat vomiting, cholera, and remove stagnation, easing discomfort and uplifting the spirits. Its aroma helps harmonize the five organs; for digestive issues, it aids the stomach and enhances appetite. The spicy nature of Huo Xiang clears the nasal passages, making it effective during times of pestilence, preventing external evil from invading and helping maintain righteous energy.
Huo Xiang Legend
A long time ago, in a deep mountain, there lived a family of two—an older brother and a younger sister, Huo Xiang. The brother later married and went off to war, leaving the two women alone. The sisters shared the household duties and worked together in harmony. One summer, the weather became oppressively hot and humid. The sister-in-law fell ill from heatstroke, experiencing fever, chills, headaches, nausea, and extreme weakness. Huo Xiang quickly helped her into bed and said, "You must have heatstroke. It’s not difficult to treat; there’s a fragrant medicinal herb in the back mountains that can cure this. I will go quickly and bring it back."
Although the sister-in-law hesitated and suggested that Huo Xiang should not go alone, Huo Xiang insisted on fetching the herb from the mountain.
Huo Xiang spent the entire day in the mountains and only returned home when night had fallen. She stumbled inside with a small basket of herbs, her eyes glazed, and collapsed on the floor. The sister-in-law hurried to support her and discovered that Huo Xiang had been bitten by a venomous snake on her right foot while gathering the herbs. The wound was red and swollen, and the poison had spread. The sister-in-law was alarmed and tried to suck the venom out, but Huo Xiang refused, fearing the sister-in-law might be poisoned.
By the time the villagers arrived with a doctor, it was too late. Huo Xiang died, but the medicinal herbs she had brought back helped cure the sister-in-law’s heatstroke. The sister-in-law, deeply moved by her young relative’s sacrifice, named the herb "Huo Xiang" in her honor, and it was planted around the house and along the paths for easy access. Over time, the reputation of "Huo Xiang" spread far and wide, helping many who suffered from heatstroke.
Because it was a medicinal herb, the name "Huo Xiang" gradually evolved, and people began writing it as "藿香" (Huò Xiāng), with the character "藿" added to indicate it was a medicinal plant.

2、Absolutely No Additives
We never add artificial fragrances, essential oils, perfumes, synthetic aromas, lime powder, plasticizers, miscellaneous wood fiber, or any other unnecessary chemical additives.
3、100% Natural and Pure
Made entirely from high-quality natural herbs with high oil content and potent medicinal properties, our incense contains minimal fiber. This results in a burn that is smooth, non-drying, non-irritating, and free from harshness. The aroma is mild yet rich, mellow, and layered. While the main herbs express their unique scent profiles fully, the precisely balanced formulas create a harmonious and refined fragrance with great depth.
4、Naturally Darker Ash Colors
Some premium herbs have a naturally rich and dense nature, which may result in darker ash colors when burned—ranging from light gray to deep gray. This is a natural presentation of unadulterated herbal material.
