Southeast Asian agarwood can be categorized into the Hui'an variety and Starry Island variety, named after the two primary regions of agarwood export.

Starry Island agarwood is known for its hard exterior, making it particularly suitable for beadwork and carving. It has a rich and intense fragrance, with over 90% of the current agarwood market being Starry Island variety. This variety is primarily produced in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and Papua New Guinea. Among these, Malaysia is further divided into West and East Malaysia, which have distinct characteristics due to their different climates.

Indonesia is the largest producer of Starry Island agarwood, including regions like Galimantan (also known as Quindian, Daragan, and Maniqiao), Sumatra, Irian (including Gayabula and Malaok), and Ambon. Among these, Sumatra and Ambon produce minimal amounts, and these regions have essentially disappeared from the market. Brunei, a small country in northern East Malaysia, also produces high-quality agarwood. Papua New Guinea, which borders Indonesia’s Irian Peninsula, produces agarwood with a fragrance similar to Gayabula.

Starry Island agarwood mainly comes from eaglewood species and is known for its rich, intense fragrance. It features bold, full-bodied aromas, which can be sweet or cool, with a relatively consistent fragrance profile. The wood is dense and tends to sink in water, making it suitable for carving, whether raw or aged. Notably, agarwood from the West Malaysian region has a more refined, sweet fragrance, differing from the intense, bold profile of Starry Island agarwood. In recent years, many incense beads labeled as "Vietnamese," "Cambodian," or "Bodhisattva" are actually made from West Malaysian agarwood.

The Hui'an variety includes agarwood from regions like Hainan in China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, and India.

Hui'an agarwood is primarily derived from the honey agarwood tree species and is characterized by a "clean, elegant, and sweet" fragrance. The scent has a sweet, cool duality, with some notes resembling fruit or floral aromas. The fragrance is penetrating and emerges gradually. Hui'an agarwood is highly revered by monks for meditation, calming, and focusing. Currently, wild Hui'an agarwood from Vietnam mostly consists of wormholes and fragmented pieces, making it brittle and unsuitable for carving. It is mainly used for incense burning and medicinal purposes, and large, solid carving materials are rare. Due to the early development and high demand for Hui'an, it is now nearly extinct.
