Southeast Asian agarwood can be divided into two main categories: Hui'an and Starwood. These names are derived from the two major regions historically known for the export of agarwood.

Starwood agarwood has a firm texture, making it particularly suitable for bead-making and carving. It has a rich and intense fragrance, and over 90% of the agarwood market today is from the Starwood variety. Starwood agarwood is primarily produced in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and Papua New Guinea. In Malaysia, the agarwood from West Malaysia and East Malaysia has different characteristics and scents due to their distinct climates.

Indonesia is the largest producer of Starwood agarwood, with notable regions including Kalimantan (covering areas like Kun Dian, Da La Gan, and Ma Ni Zha), Sumatra, Iliyan (including areas like Gaya Bala and Mara OK), and Ambon. The production of agarwood from Sumatra and Ambon is very limited, and these sources are practically no longer available in the market. Brunei, a small country in northern East Malaysia, also produces top-quality agarwood. Papua New Guinea, located next to Indonesia's Iliyan Peninsula, produces agarwood that has a similar fragrance to Gaya Bala.

Starwood agarwood is primarily derived from eaglewood species and has a dense fragrance. The characteristic scent is bold, rich, and either sweet or cool. The fragrance is relatively uniform and robust. The wood's density is high, and it tends to sink in water. Both raw and mature agarwood are suitable for carving. A notable difference is that the agarwood from West Malaysia has a gentler, more refined sweet scent, unlike the intense fragrance typically associated with Starwood varieties. In recent years, many incense beads sold under names like "Vietnam," "Cambodia," and "Bodhisattva" are actually made from West Malaysian agarwood.

Hui'an agarwood is produced in regions such as Hainan in China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, and India.

Hui'an agarwood is primarily derived from the resin of the sweet-scented trees and is characterized by a delicate, sweet, and floral fragrance. Its scent has both a sweet and cool quality, with a penetrating, string-like texture that gradually unfurls. Monks in temples often use Hui'an agarwood for meditation, quieting the mind, and focusing. Currently, wild Hui'an agarwood from Vietnam mostly consists of insect-infested or broken pieces, which are fragile and primarily used for incense or medicine, with very few pieces suitable for carving. Large, whole pieces are rare and should be carefully preserved. However, due to its early development and the popularity of its fragrance, Hui'an agarwood is nearly extinct today.
