Lingxiangcao, also known as Guang Linglingxiang, Guang Lingxiang, Pingnan Xiang, Mountain-full Fragrance, and Linglingxiang, is described in Li Shizhen’s Compendium of Materia Medica (Ming Dynasty), under “Grasses III – Linglingxiang.”

“Linglingxiang grows in the provinces of Hunan and Lingnan, mostly in low, damp areas. Its leaves resemble hemp, arranged in opposing pairs. Its stems are square in shape. It typically flowers in mid-July. Its fragrance is notable. In ancient times, it was referred to as Xuncao (fragrant grass for fumigation).”
Lingxiangcao is known as the king of aromatic herbs. It possesses unique properties not found in ordinary crops or flowers. It thrives in remote, mist-covered mountain forests, prefers cleanliness, and must be cultivated in pristine conditions, free from grazing and foot traffic. Fresh Lingxiangcao emits no fragrance, but once dried, its scent becomes increasingly rich and long-lasting. Its aroma can linger for decades without fading.
According to the Compendium of Materia Medica, Lingxiangcao is also called “Revival Grass.” Legend tells that in ancient times, someone who had fallen unconscious was revived after Lingxiangcao was burned within the city. The scent lingered for three days, hence the name “Revival Grass.”

In the Great Auspicious Dharani Sutra, Volume 4, it is said that different deities of the Heavenly Dragon Eightfold Assembly should be offered different types of incense. Among them, Lingling Incense is the designated offering for King Kinnara (伽羅龍王).
